“MENAJAK FESTIVAL 2011 OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF CALAMBA, MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL”

Finally after a few days of almost everyday practice, the time arrives for the Menajak Festival 2011 contingents to show what they’ve learn from their

 choreographer that will show the culture and tradition of the Subanen Tribes that settling in Calamba, Misamis Occidental and some parts of Misamis Occidental. The Local Government Unit of Calamba, Misamis Occidental held the much awaited Menajak Festival 2011 last February 14, 2011 as the main event for the 63rd Araw ng Calamba.

Menajak is a Subanen words which means “LOVE”. The festival is held every two years during the Araw ng Calamba. The Menajak Tableau Competition and Search for Menajak Festival Queen 2011 highlights the 63rd Araw ng Calamba.

The Menajak festival is one of the much awaited festivals in Calamba with a very rich history of the Subanen Tribes. The Menajak Festival is a unique celebration of the Town’s Foundation Anniversary wherein the 4 contingents wear Subanen costumes and it shows how the Calambahanons gives important and respect to the belief, tradition and culture of the Subanen Tribes. Through the Festival the heritage of the Subanen were preserve for the next generation.

The competition was dived to three categories the Street Dancing, Search for Menajak Festival Queen 2011 and Tableau Competition.

They were four (4) contingents. Contingent No. 1 students from Liberation Institute, Contingent No. 2 Calamba National Comprehensive High School students, Contingent No. 3 Sacred Heart High School students and Contingent No. 4 College of Communication Information and Technology students.

After the Civic Parade, at 10 o’clock in the morning the streets in the Poblacion area filled with people waiting for the Street Dancing. The street dancing passed by the streets of Don Bernardo A. Neri, Solinog, Northern Poblacion and back to the Municipal Quadrangle. Each contingent required to perform in three (3) judging areas situated at Park and Go (Southwestern Poblacion), Calamba Integrated Bus Terminal (Don Bernardo A. Neri) and the final judging situated in Rotunda Rizal. The streets are usually lined with pedestrians all wanting to witness the street-dancing.

In the afternoon before the Tableau Competition, the 4 lovely ladies from each contingent performed in from of the Judges for the Search of Menajak Festival Queen 2011. They performed solo to the beat of drums, trumpet and other musical instrument.

The Tableau Competition started at 1 o’clock in the afternoon. With the constant beating of drums, trumpets and other musical instruments, the contingents performed in an over crowded venue. Each performance which told a story on courtship and marriage in a Subanen culture; a story of a sick person; story of nature especially the Mount Malindang and the story reveling the tradition and culture of the Subanen Tribes.

Provincial Governor of Misamis Occidental Hon. Herminia M. Ramiro graced the event. She enjoyed watching each performance.

The Municipal Quadrangle filled with people especially students from the College of Communication Information and Technology, Sacred Heart High School, Calamba National Comprehensive High School and Liberation Institute cheering for their respective school participant. The crowds were so excited watching each performance of all the competitors. They were cheering and shouting with glee.

Aside from the festive dancing, each competitor was also judge according to their costumes which includes the choice of color and appropriateness of costumes; props; performance and choreography, including mastery, dance variation, formation, precision and coordination, focus and projection, visual impact and style and expression; and style and music including rhythm, dynamics, and suitability.

There are three (3) roving judges for the street dancing competition and then five (5) judges for the Tableau Competition.

When the results were tabulated the contingents were so eager waiting for the result. Their heart beat faster like a beat of a drum when the Chairman of the Board of Judges announced the results.

Miss. Hannah M. Canencia of Calamba National Comprehensive High School and from Contingent No. 3 was crowned as Menajak Festival Queen 2011. Her charm, Subanen costume, how she introduced her self considering the tribe she represents and most especially the ability to interpret the Subanen dance made her as the Menajak Festival Queen 2011.

Best in Costumes and Best in Musicality goes to Contingent No. 3 Sacred Heart High School

The joint efforts of the Local Government Unit of Calamba, Misamis Occidental, Calamba Local Tourism Council spearheaded by ABC President Hon. Ezel T. Villanueva, Barangay Councils from the 19 Barangays, Municipal Employees, School Administration, Faculties and Students and other participating sectors made the occasion successful.
