Third Sunday of January is the feast of Senior Santo Niño. Last January 20, 2008 Barangay Southwestern Poblacion of Calamba, Misamis Occidental joined the nationwide celebration of the feast of Senior Santo Niño.
Early in the morning (3 o’clock in the morning) before sunset, the devotees parade the Patron Saint Santo Niño along the streets of Calamba. This event is locally known as “Dianalog”.
After the second mass (10:30 A.M.), the Catholic Church and devotees also honored the feast of Senior Santo. Niño. They performed the Sinulog Ritual in-front of the image of Senor Santo. Nino placed in the front door of the Catholic Church were parishioners and devotees joined and witnessed. Different Catholic Organization joined the annual celebration.
In the afternoon, Southwestern Poblacion held its yearly celebration of the feast in honor of the Barangay’s Patron Saint Senior Santo of Southwestern Poblacion. Parishioners, devotees form other places, barangay officials of Southwestern Poblacion, guests, participants/dance troupes and neighboring barangays joined together on Sunday’s Senior Santo Niño Sinulog Festival in honoring the Patron Saint and bringing with them small statue of Senior Santo Nino while dancing in the streets.
The procession routes from the Barangay Hall of Southwestern Poblacion, passed by the streets of Don Bernardo A. Neri, Solinog and then Northern Poblacion and back to the Barangay Hall of Southwestern for the proper Sinulog Ritual.
Hundreds of viewers from the nearby barangays of Southwestern Poblacion and nearby municipalities waited to the streets as early as 12:30 in the afternoon. Streets of Calamba were so busy with people waiting for the participants of the street dancing to pass by along with them the Patron Saint Senor Santo. Niño. People from all walks of life even small children joined the usual street dancing before the proper presentation of dances.
All the participants wear a colorful costumes, makeup and dance to the beat of drums and other musical instruments.
This year’s six (6) contingents came to participate in the street parade and Sinulog Ritual. The contingents were from Barangays Don Bernardo A. Neri, Magcamiguing, Solinog, Southwestern Poblacion and Eva’s Apple (Gay Association of Calamba).
Before the street dancing begins it was sunny but towards late afternoon during the street dancing and proper Sinulog Ritual a heavy rain poured but the participants even children continued performing and keep dancing just to honor the Santo Niño and to excite hundreds of viewers. A heavy rain did not hinder the viewer’s eagerness as the performers doing the street dancing and continued to put on a show during the Sinulog Ritual. For the performers the heavy rain was not a hindrance for them to perform. Children were chilling because of their wet costumes but you can still see their smiles as they present.

During the Sinulog ritual all the participants showed their best in performing in an overcrowded venue just to show the Sinulog steps and rituals with the continual beating of drums and other musical instruments. Each dance performed which told a story that reveals the belief of the Filipinos to the oldest image brought by the Spaniards to the Philippines which is the Senior Santo Niño. The rituals showed how Senor Santo Niño gives miracles and changed the life and the beliefs of the Filipinos. Aside from that the Performers demonstrated how Senior Santo Niño gives abundant harvest.
For the first time the Eva’s Apple which is a Gay Association of Calamba joined the Sinulog Festival. Their unique costumes and their breath taking performances made the audience cheer. For them their unique personalities was not a hindrance to performed and to honor Senior Santo Niño.
Policemen and Police intern together with volunteers (Barangay Tanod and Karancho) manned the streets of Calamba to keep the traffic in control for the procession and parade pass by and to control the crowd from overflowing into the parade route.
Municipal Mayor Dr. Luisito B. Villanueva, Jr., MNSA graced and witnessed the Sinulog Festival 2008 of Southwestern Poblacion. He supported his wife Barangay Captain Ezel T. Villanueva in organizing the said event.
It was a whole day celebration of the feast of Senior Santo Niño.
Senior Santo Niño Sinulog Festival in Calamba, Misamis Occidental was spearheaded by first timer/newly elected Barangay Captain of Southwestern Poblacion Engr. Ezel Tabuelog Villanueva together with the Barangay Officials of Southwestern Poblacion in coordination with last year organizer of the Sinulog the Atay’s Family.
It was ended a successful event. VIVA SENIOR SANTO NIÑO!!!
